TYSON FURY “I ONLY TRAINED 5 WEEKS FOR NGANNOU”
In a recent revelation, Tyson Fury admitted that he only trained for five weeks leading up to his bout with Francis Ngannou in October. Despite hitting the canvas in the third round, Fury recovered and secured a split decision victory at the end of the 10 rounds.
Critics questioned Fury's preparation for Ngannou, noting his lackluster performance and suspicions that he hadn't trained adequately for the ex-UFC champion making his professional boxing debut.
Now, at 35, Fury gears up for a significant clash with Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on February 17. In a TNT Sports interview with Usyk and Steve Bunce, Fury candidly revealed his minimal gym time for the Ngannou fight, stating, “I'm not even in the gym. I don't train this far out come on. Who do you think you're talking to? A professional athlete? Come on. I train four to five weeks for these fights.”
When confronted about his earlier claim of training for 12 weeks for the Ngannou bout, Fury dismissed it, asserting, “Please. Like I trained 12 weeks for [Deontay] Wilder and everybody else. Four or five weeks. How much training does a man need? Three or four weeks of sparring and one week of resting, done.”
Fury emphasized the extensive experience boxers accumulate over their lives, downplaying the need for excessive training. He stated, “We’ve been boxing for all of our lives since young boys, how much training do we need? I’m sure we aren’t going to forget how to box, and it’s not a fitness competition, so I don’t think you need any more than five weeks.”
Closing with a touch of humor, Fury expressed confidence in his abilities, stating, “I know he can’t beat me, I know he can’t. A man who wears an earring can never beat Tyson Fury, ever. Not a chance, no one who wears earrings can beat him.”
